Happy 35th Anniversary
ASPIRA of Florida!
It is with great pleasure that we begin this year with jubilation as we celebrate being a part of the every day fabric of Miami for 35 years and counting.
In 1981, a group of community leaders came together in Miami to form ASPIRA of Florida when the city was at a crossroads that hindered the progression of minority youth from thriving.
As a direct result, ASPIRA of Florida created a successful approach in working with students and became the premier youth development organization in South Florida. Throughout this time, ASPIRA of Florida built a solid foundation based on consistently moving its vision forward through hard work and determination from Miami-Dade, Broward to Palm Beach County.
As we evolved, we expanded our services beyond our well-known ASPIRA Youth Leadership Clubs by being one of the first organizations' to bring the charter school movement to Miami and offering exceptional educational services and innovative afterschool programming. By doing so, we have been able to service more than 96,000 students and families, a humbling feat that we continue to build upon.
Some of our recent accomplishments include: constructing a new school facility in Wynwood at ASPIRA Arts DECO; building a new media center and museum at ASPIRA Raul Arnaldo Martinez Charter; and adding an elementary component at ASPIRA Leadership & College Preparatory Academy to create a full K-8 center. These endeavors could not have been possible if it was not for those before us who founded ASPIRA.
Prior to starting ASPIRA of Florida in Miami, the origins of ASPIRA began in New York in 1961 by Dr. Antonia Pantoja, a visionary Puerto Rican leader who fought for minority students to stay in school and graduate from college. She named the organization ASPIRA, a commanding Spanish word meaning "to aspire". Since its inception, it became synonymous with empowerment and opportunities for youth through the creation of ASPIRA Youth Leadership Clubs.
Today, ASPIRA of Florida is proud to be built on a tradition of excellence as we are passionate about making a difference in the lives of our youth and committed to helping them achieve their greatest potential academically and personally. We, at ASPIRA of Florida, believe there is no greater privilege than the opportunity to give back to our community.
Congratulations to all the youth who have passed through ASPIRA of Florida to become ASPIRANTES and become leaders throughout the communities in which we serve.
