Winter Break 2008 Tutoring Camp

tutoringcamp1During the months of December and January, the Leadership Development (YLD) Miami-Dade Youth Division hosted the Winter Break Tutoring Camp from December 22-January 2, 2009. Several ASPIRA staff and students contributed to the camp through their participation in the event and inclusion in the program.

Teachers from the ASPIRA Eugenio Maria De Hostos Charter School and YLD staff members conducted FCAT tutoring and college preparation workshops for the students while several students from the school Leadership Clubs attended as camp participants and volunteers. ASPIRANTES from Allapattah Middle, De Hostos Charter, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior, Miami Beach Senior, North Miami Senior, and Thomas Jefferson Middle attended along with a camp volunteer from the Secondary School Dropouts Club.

tutoringcamp2One of the features of the camp was a workshop given by Mr. Orlando Espinosa, Regional Account Executive for Sallie Mae. Mr. Espinosa enlightened the students on access to college financial aid that is specifically targeted towards Latino and other minority students. While the workshops given by tutors and staff informed our ASPIRANTES, they also had the opportunity to hone their technology skills by using the computers in our lab to research educational websites and take online lessons. All attendees gave rave reviews of the camp and mentioned they would attend in the future.

The YLD Miami-Dade Division looks forward to planning and executing its 2009 Spring Break Tutoring Camp later this year.
