ASPIRANTES go to the Capitol!

On March 31, 2009, a total of 21 ASPIRANTES from Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties visited the State Capitol in Tallahassee for three days. These students represented the ASPIRA Public Policy and Leadership Program (APPLP), an ASPIRA program dedicated to the development of young adults who want to learn about government, the policy-making process and how to get important issues to the forefront of the community.

The ASPIRANTES were honored to meet with Florida legislators including the House Majority Leader, Adam Hasner, Representative Ronald Brise, Representative Priscilla Taylor, Representative Kelly Skidmore, Representative James Bush IIIĀ and Senator Larcenia Bullard. The students also had the privilege to speak with Vernon "Pick-Up" Crawford who shared his life experience as a lobbyist.

In addition, the ASPIRANTES participated in an ENLACE of Florida luncheon that focused on access to college. The students were intrigued by the keynote speaker, Dr. Jimmie Lee Davis, Jr., who motivated the students to have full confidence in themselves to achieve their goals and dreams.

The ASPIRANTES enjoyed the trip thoroughly and look forward to learning more about the government and how they can get their voices heard.
