ASPIRA Public Policy & Leadership Program (APPLP) Students are recognized by the City of North Miami

City of North Miami Council Meeting It was a remarkable night on February 9, 2010 in the City of North Miami Council Chambers where the APPLP Aspirantes expectantly arrived to observe the City of North Miami Council Meeting. The students were very excited to meet the Mayor, Andre Pierre and the other Counil members.

The meeting commenced and honorable Mayor Andre Pierre announced he was going to start with the Special presentations.  ASPIRA was the first on the Aaenda. Honorable Mayor Pierre said “I would like to present a Proclamation to ASPIRA of Florida, Inc, please students come forward to receive this proclamation.”  The Aspirantes were amazed as they did not expect such recognition; they stood proud and confident.

Honorable Mayor Pierre announced the proclamation and took a picture with the Aspirantes and their Youth Advisors (Iris Corchado, Indira Rabelo and Ludy Fontaine). Mayor Pierre also thanked the Aspirantes present for all their dedication and efforts, well gave a special thank you to ASPIRA for all they do in the community.

The Proclamation read as follow,

“The City of Norh Miami Florida is pleased to issue this proclamation in honor of ASPIRA of Florida, Inc.

Whereas, ASPIRA of Florida is committed to fostering the social advancement of the Puerto Rican/Latino community by empowering its youth in the pursuit of educational excellence through leadership and development programs that emphasize commitment to the community; and

Whereas, ASPIRA of Florida develops the leadership capacity of its youth by engaging them in weekly leadership club meetings guided by a curriculum designed to develop cultural and self awareness, as well as critical thinking and social skills; an d

Whereas, ASPIRA of Florida provides youth with a variety of leadership development opportunities facilitated by a staff of young professionals who can relate to the needs of our youth and provide educational services in culturally competent and youth-focused manner, and the vision of Aspira of Florida is to “develop a better educated more community conscious and committed youth.”

Now, Therfore, in consideration of the foregoing, I, Andre D. Pierre, Mayor of the City of North Miami, on behalf of the City Council and Citizens, do hereby proclaim February 9, 20010 to be ASPIRA of FLORIDA, Inc. Day

In the City of North Miami and urge all citizens to recognize and celebrate Aspira’s contributions to our community

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of North Miami to be affixed this 9th day of February 2010.”

After receiving the proclamation and taking pictures, we proudly returned to our seats, where Aspirantes were able to have a real life experience of how parliamentary procedures are implemented.  In this manner they could conduct their Leadership Club and ACF meetings in an effective and correct manner.

This was a great experience for our Aspirantes and the staff present.  We are very proud of being part of an organization such as ASPIRA; that really cares about its youth and takes the lead in teaching and showing Aspirantes the right path to choose in order to achieve their dreams and become productive individuals in their community (Flying Pitirres).
