2009 Miami-Dade Youth Award Ceremony: New Leaders, New Beginnings

During the 2009 Miami-Dade Youth Award Ceremony (New Leaders, New Beginnings) over 175 ASPIRANTES, family members and community leaders celebrated the accomplishments achieved during the 2008-2009 academic year.  The night was filled with fun and excitement as many ASPIRANTES were recognized. Among those recognized were 92 graduating seniors who were active in their school's ASPIRA Leadership Club. In addition, two of ASPIRA's most prestigious awards, the Raul A. Martinez President's Award and Dr. Antonia Pantoja Award, were given to Selvin Lumbi of Booker T. Washington Senior High School and Kristeen Pawly, a senior at Miami Beach Senior High School, respectively. These two ASPIRANTES were recognized for their unwavering commitment to ASPIRA and for overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds in becoming successful young adults.

Among other student awards that were given out were the ASPIRANTE of the Year, Up and Coming Pitirre, Most Academically Improved, the Extra Mile Award and the Community Service Award. North Miami Senior High School and Campbell Drive Middle School received the honor of Club of the Year and all Club officers received Leadership Medals.

Furthermore, five ASPIRANTES were awarded with ASPIRA College Education Scholarships. The Local Advisory Council acting chair, Gizelle Ortiz-Velazquez, was on hand to announce the scholarship recipients.

In addition to the ASPIRANTES who were recognized during the YAC, ASPIRA awarded a community leader, Club liaison and active family with distinguished recognition:

  • Community Sponsor of the Year: Maricely Vazquez, District 9 Commissioner Aide received this award for her hard work and dedication to ASPIRA, especially during the planning and execution of the Annual Puerto Rican Discovery Day Celebration.
  • Club Liason of the Year: Ms. Harris, Miami Jackson Senior High School.
  • Family of the Year: Mrs. Roberts from Homestead, FL.

The event culminated on the dance floor and with a photo booth ran by ASPIRA's College Club. The students enjoyed themselves immensely and look forward to summer events and activities.
